One year after saying she "won't probably perform again", Britney Spears has hinted that she could be releasing new music.

"I wrote a new song!!!" the 41-year-old singer wrote on Instagram

Britney also teased a possible name for her new song.

"Hate you to like me!!! No beef with anyone … just being a narcissist in a claimed, self-entitled way!!! It’s to accumulate interest by giving ego with my eyes closed because I hear important people do that these days," she captioned the post, which features a screenshot from her 'Overprotected' music video.

The pop star did not reveal any further details about the song. It's unclear at this stage when she will release it - if ever.

Nonetheless, her fans are excited about the possibility of new music.

"My obsession with Britney Spears is at an all time high and she needs to give me new music. Me, myself, and I can take her straight to number 1," one Twitter user wrote.

However, with all things Britney-related these days, the singer's post has sparked controversy online. Some have suggested that she is throwing shade at Selena Gomez.

Many noticed that 'Hate You To Like Me' is similar to Selena's 'Lose You To Love Me'.

"Britney Spears can’t enjoy her memoir and all the praise she’s getting… she just had to find a way to insult Selena somehow," one Selena fan wrote on X

Britney's fans clapped back.

"Dude, calm the f**k down. Just [because] Britney Spears posted lyrics kinda mimicking Selena Gomez's song does not mean it's a shade for her. I believe she is using Sel's song title as an inspiration to shade someone," the X user replied.

Selena was one of only a few celebrities who attended Britney's wedding to Sam Asghari in 2022. Madonna, Paris Hilton, and Drew Barrymore were also guests.

The verdict is still out on whether Britney is shading Selena or not, but there is one music superstar that she is a big fan of.

She praised Mariah Carey in her new memoir, 'The Woman in Me'. The singer recalled their first meeting.

"I knocked on Mariah Carey’s dressing room door. She opened it and out poured the most beautiful, otherworldly light. You know how we all have ring lights now? Well, more than 20 years ago, only Mariah Carey knew about ring lights," she wrote.

Britney also revealed in the book why she has taken a break from music.

"Pushing forward in my music career is not my focus at the moment. Right now it's time to get my spiritual life in order, to pay attention to the little things, to slow down..." she wrote, according to Music Times.

The 'Toxic' singer added: "...being an entertainer was great, but over the last five years my passion to entertain in front of a live audience has lessened. I do it for myself now. I feel God more when I'm alone."

It is important to note that she wrote the book several months ago and could possibly be changing her tune on the matter!
