Remembering the legacy of Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela, one of the greatest men that ever lived, was born on 18 July 1918.
The Nobel Peace Prize recipient changed the lives of many people around the world. As a result, his birthday is celebrated by doing kind deeds for others in honour of his legacy.

We look back at some of the many ways in which he inspired a positive change in the world:
- Mandela was a selfless leader who gave his life to fighting for the equality of humans in South Africa. He spent 27 years in prison for challenging South Africa's discriminatory apartheid system. One of his famous quotes is: "Real leaders must be ready to sacrifice all for the freedom of their people.”
- In 1993, Mandela and FW de Klerk jointly won the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to end apartheid peacefully. Mandela played a vital role in uniting South Africans and ensuring that as a country we enjoy peace and freedom.
- Mandela encouraged forgiveness. Another famous quote is: “Resentment is like drinking poison and then hoping it will kill your enemies.”
- Mandela fought for children's rights. He even set up the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund which has changed the lives of thousands of children in South Africa, especially those who are orphans of the AIDS crisis.
- The former president loved education and has inspired a love for education. He often said: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” He studied Law at the University College of Fort Hare and the University of Witwatersrand.
