WhatsApp has been hit by a security breach.

According to Wired.com, Israeli spy firm, NSO Group, injected malware onto targeted phones in order to steal data by placing a phone call.

According to the report, targets didn't even need to pick up the call and there was often no trace in the call log.

The Guardian adds that the spyware is "capable of trawling through calls, texts and other data, activating the phone’s camera and microphone and performing other malicious activities."

Facebook, the owner of WhatsApp, has encouraged WhatsApp users to update their app to the latest version. The Guardian reports that Facebook implemented a server-side change to help protect users and pushed out updates for the various smartphone versions of WhatsApp on Monday.

The publication also encourages users to keep all their apps up to date.
