Some locals in Jagersrust captured a funnel cloud forming earlier this afternoon and some of the videos and photographs were shared.

South African Weather Service forecaster, Wayne Venter has confirmed it was a tornado that was spotted.

"With the footage that we received and also from our radar images and observations in the area, we can confirm that there was indeed a tornado in the Bergville area."

"At this moment, we cannot confirm any damages. We did get some information that there was a roof of a house that was removed, but because of the tornado being more in the mountainous areas we haven't received any other report," he said.

Storm chaser DJ Hefer from Storm Reports SA says he was sent some footage by one of their members who'd captured the formation.

"Before a tornado touches the ground it is called a funnel cloud, and as soon as the funnel cloud touches the ground it is called a tornado."

"We have confirmation that from our eyewitness that sent out the video to us, that the funnel cloud touched the ground multiple times which makes it a tornado in the Bergville area," he said.

On Tuesday, a tornado barrelled through some areas of the Midlands claiming two lives and flattening homes, knocking down power lines and uprooting trees.
