In 1986 the formation of what was to become one of the biggest pop acts of all time introduced us to the Swedish Pop Rock act Roxette. Per Gessle was on guitar and vocals and the incredibly talented Marie Fredriksson was on vocals and keyboard – and together, they were a formidable hit-making machine.
Both were well established artists in Sweden before coming together and then taking the world by storm with albums spanning from 1988 (Look Sharp!) to their last official studio album Good Karma released in 2016. They sold more than 80 million records worldwide.
It Must Have Been Love was one of Roxette's top songs - released in 1987.
In September 2002 Marie Fredriksson had a seizure in her bathroom that
lead to her falling and a cracking her skull. A brain scan revealed she
had a tumor on the brain and she was given a 25% chance of survival.
Being Marie though she fought on and was able to tour again between 2008
and 2016 when she announced her retirement.
News came through this week that Marie had sadly died at the age of 61 "following a 17-year long battle with cancer".
Her family said in a statement “It is with great sadness that we have to announce that one of our biggest and most beloved artists is gone.”
Gessle paid tribute to Fredriksson following her death: “Time goes by so fast. It feels like just recently when Marie and I were sitting in my little apartment in Halmstad sharing dreams. And what a fantastic dream we got to share! Thank you Marie, thank you for everything. You were a truly unique musician, a singer on a level we will hardly ever experience again. You painted my black and white songs with the most beautiful colours.”
