LISTEN: Local Durban man stuck in Afghanistan shares live events with ECR presenter

Young and vibrant Early Breakfast presenter, Mike Vee, had one of his avid listeners share that he is actually in Afghanistan. This was Sherwood's Kerwin van der Merwe who is there on employment. 

The news and social media have been flooded with footage of families hoping to flee the country following the takeover of the Taliban. The withdrawal of the US military forces from the country sparked this upheaval.

So the fire safety officer, who is a family man, shared a voice note which clearly depicts that events unfolding on that side of the world. 

Being a father and husband so far away from his close family and friends is obviously traumatising and scary. But it is looking quite positive that he might be making a return to Durban. 

Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) are making attempts to have South African citizens returned home in the coming days. But whilst he awaits that to happen, he is braving it out in Afghanistan.

Mike Vee described the man as "tenacious and brave" and we would like to keep it like that. We anticipate his safe return to his lovely family.
