LISTEN: Are we ever going to have normal beaches again?

It has been a rough time for KZN's natural areas...
Over the last couple of weeks, we have seen our beaches being opened and closed again.
This is because eThekwini Municipality has decided to now close them due to high levels of E-coli in the water.

As we gear up for what is set to be a busy weekend in the city of Durban, one can only wonder what can be done to solve this problem.
One has to wonder, what sort of effects is this having on the residents of KwaZulu-Natal?
As we're all concerned about the state of our beaches in KZN, we had to get someone in who's an expert in this field.
We managed to chat with Micole Martens, who's an Associate Director at Talbot Laboratories, to help us make sense out of this.

According to Mayo Clinic, 'Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria normally live in the intestines of healthy people and animals. Most types of E. coli are harmless or cause relatively brief diarrhea. However, a few strains, such as E. coli O157:H7, can cause severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea and vomiting.'
