Many of us have seen the super cute pics of our main man Darren Maule with his Jack Russel Gemma and Labrador Max.

Earlier this week, the photo on his Facebook page showing adorable 14-year-old Gemma enjoying a cool bath was something we all wished we were doing.

On behalf of all pet lovers, Darren spent time early this week with Durban veterinarian Dr Kevin Stevens

Dr Stevens is from Ballito Vet Hospital and has over 30 years of experience, while veterinary assistant Samson Ndlovo has an incredible forty years of experience in caring for our fur babies.

Darren spoke to Dr Stevens about what we can do to keep our pets comfortable in this weather:

Are any animals or breeds more prone to heat stroke or dehydration?

With the recent hot spell one can see that millions of chickens have died from heat stroke.

All animals are susceptible, including humans.

Dogs are very prone to the same. Bulldogs, pugs or generally brachycephalics (overshot jaw) are more susceptible, but all dogs are susceptible.

What are your top tips for caring for animals in these high temperatures?

Don’t take them out for activities in the heat of the day; keep them out of the car, keep them in cool, well-ventilated spots, and make sure they have free access to cool water and lots of cool air.

If they seem too hot and you have a pool, help them to have a swim.

What are the tell-tale signs that your pet could have been severely affected by high temperatures and would need expert care?

Collapsed, panting heavily, and very hot to the touch.

Is it true that adding ice cubes to water is helpful?

Definitely yes!

What are you seeing lots of at this time of year?

We are seeing many older dogs battling with the heat, particularly the cardiac patients. Gastroenteritis is rife at the moment and we live in an endemic rabies area.

Rabies is a huge problem in KZN and it is a public health issue. All animals including humans which are bitten by a rabid animal will die if not treated timeously or if not vaccinated.

Please be responsible and ensure that your pets are fully immunised for dangerous diseases.
