SA lockdown: Metro cop arrested after man shot, killed following tavern visit

A 41-year-old Vosloorus man was allegedly gunned down in his backyard on Sunday after metro police officers found him at a nearby tavern.

The man is alleged to have been among several community members at a tavern when police approached to disperse the gathering.


A scuffle broke out, and members of the Ekurhuleni metro police Department fired rubber bullets.


The 41-year old fled to his home, but the metro police officers followed him.


Acting spokesperson for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) Sontaga Seisa says it is there that the man was shot and killed.


"The police were enforcing the Covid 19 lockdown regulations."


"It is alleged that officers tried to effect the arrest, some people, together with some community members, attacked them. In retaliation, the police then discharged the rubber bullets. It is further alleged that the deceased was followed up to his veranda home where he was fatally shot at."


Three children were also injured in the crossfire and taken to hospital.


"It is reported that there are other persons, including minors aged 5 years old, 6 years old and 11-year-old twins that were also injured during the incident as a result were taken to the nearby medical facilities for treatment," he adds.


A 34-year old metro police officer and a private security officer have since been arrested.


The pair are expected to appear at the Boksburg Regional Court on Tuesday on charges of murder and attempted murder.


Further investigations are underway.
