Nzimande: Tertiary institutions will not open under level 4 of the lockdown
Updated | By Newswatch
Minister of Higher Education, Blade Nzimande has confirmed that tertiary institutions will not open under level four of the lockdown.
Nzimande made the announcement in a press conference in Pretoria on Thursday evening.
He says the only exception will be the phased return of final year medical students.
“Our responsibility is to lower the infection that is our overriding concern.” Nzimande said.
“We must save the 2020 academic year but not at the expense of lives. Our efforts must avoid worsening the infection curve.”
“We will be implementing a risk-adjusted strategy for the entire post-school education and training sector based on the COVID-19 protocol,” he added.
The minister confirmed that in the month of May, government will assist institutions with deep cleaning of campuses and ensuring that students are equipped with protective tools when they return.
