The Department of Correctional Services says there have been 397 cases of COVID-19 that have affected their facilities in KZN.
Of the cases recorded 373 people were officials while 24 of them were inmates.
The department has confirmed that the province has experienced three deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.
Two officials and one prisoner have succumbed to the virus while there have been 127 recoveries.
Recently at least 281 former offenders from five prisons in KZN’s Pietermaritzburg Management Area have since been released to ease congestion at correctional facilities.
In May President Cyri Ramaphosa gave the go-ahead for the release of 19 000 low-risk offenders to reduce overcrowding and combat spread of COVID-19 in prisons.
