Sihle Zikalala has launched a province-wide coronavirus screening and testing
programme in Pietermaritzburg.
KZN has 519 COVID-19 cases while the province has recorded the highest number of deaths in the country with 18 fatalities to date.
Hundreds of residents from the Jika Joe informal settlement will be screened today.
Those exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms will be tested.
“The programme is crucial to our quest to flatten the curve of the coronavirus as outlined by our president, Cyril Ramaphosa recently,” Zikalala said.
The programme began in Umlazi, south of Durban two weeks ago and then moved to Stanger on the north coast last week.
“We launch the programme at a time where our country is doing everything possible to contain the spread of the virus,” he added.
There are currently 2506 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country with 34 fatalities.
