As Health Dept monitors level 4 infection rate, Ramaphosa says expect an increase
The Health Minister says they are keenly monitoring the impact of the level four lockdown on the country's coronavirus infection rate.
Zweli Mkhize was speaking at a briefing in Durban on Tuesday - where the President Cyril Ramaphosa received a report on KwaZulu-Natal's efforts in the fight against COVID-19.
"The numbers of people who are moving around, we believe that it is going to start showing numbers increasing a bit more. "
"We had never thought that we would completely get rid of the viral outbreak, but that somewhere along the line what we intend to do is to keep pushing the curve further."
Ramaphosa says while the level five lockdown has helped somewhat - we must continue social distancing and wearing masks to reduce the chance of infection.
"As South Africans, we must expect that the rate of infections is going to increase. They also inform us that we have done extremely well in levelling that curve. The level five lockdown has done a great deal of good to our country and people. "
Ramaphosa has applauded the KZN government for how it's been responding to the coronavirus crisis.
"You have demonstrated once again that faced with a major challenge and crisis like this; you are able to do much more than what one would have expected. You have set up the correct and right structures that are enabling you and us to properly address the situation that we are in now."
