Elderly Durban couple says still battling COVID-19 stigma despite recovery
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
An elderly Durban couple says its days of battling COVID-19 and its impact are not over even after a full recovery.
Alfred and Joan Cordier say although they are focused on good health, dealing with stigmatisation is still a major challenge.
The 65 and 60-year-old husband and wife duo contracted COVID-19 two months ago and recovered after 14-days in isolation.
Alfred says it is sad that people at their elderly residence think they still carry the virus.
"There is a stigma around this whole thing. They tend to look down on us hence my fight is not with the virus, but the people, because they still see us carriers", he said.
Cordier has urged elderly people who test positive for COVID-19 to keep a positive mindset.
"Please, do not fear. There is almost a 100% chance of recovery. They must not believe it is the end of the world for them", Cordier said.
