Durban beachfront promenade will remain open under level 4

The Durban beachfront promenade will remain open under the COVID-19 level 4 lockdown regulations, the eThekwini municipality confirmed.

In a statement, the municipality says, "the promenade will be opened for public use tomorrow under very strict conditions, while other public spaces, including ablution facilities, remain closed until further notice."

Level 4 of the lockdown regulations permits outdoor exercising between 6am and 9am within a 5km radius from your home. 

"Law enforcement will unwaveringly monitor all activities allowed under level 4 and will not hesitate to deal with non-compliant members."

"Residents are encouraged to comply unceasingly with regulations of level 4 of South Africa’s COVID-19 lockdown, by among others wearing masks and practice social distancing," it said in a statement. 

Today the municipality began deep cleaning the promenade.  

While announcing the activation of the level 4 lockdown, President Cyril Ramaphosa said the eThekwini Metro is one of six municipalities in SA with the highest number of cases.  

Latest COVID-19 statistics in KwaZulu-Natal reveal that there are 1 006 confirmed cases - the third highest in the province. The province has recorded 32 deaths - the second highest in the country. There's been 372 recoveries in KZN. 

Currently, there are 5 951 confirmed cases in SA - the death toll stands at 116.
