The incentive is once-off and took effect on 1 June, running until the end of June.

Municipality's spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela says there are conditions. The incentive applies to customers sitting with debt for more than 90 days.

They will have to enter into a credit agreement with eThekwini on condition they pay 50% of the arrears (excluding interest) on or before 30 June.

"In the event, for example, you owe us R20 000, come and pay 50% of that and then the remainder we'll have to enter into an agreement, and you'll have to settle it in a period of 24 months.

"There is no interest that is going to be charged. In the event that you default during that period, we'll be left with no choice but to reinstate the interest.

"So your debt has to be 90 days and older, and you need to pay your half of the amount that you are currently owing to the city before 30 June."
