Summer is the time to feel good. East Coast Radio's music department has
picked 15 songs that will bring you musical sunshine.
Use our playlist of summer songs to soundtrack all your adventures to the beach, at your next braai or just lounging poolside.
1. Havana – Camilla Cabello
‘Havana’ is a song recorded by Cuban-American singer Camila Cabello, featuring guest vocals from American rapper Young Thug. It was released on August 3, 2017 as a promotional single for her debut album, ‘OMG’.
2. Mi Gente – J Balvin & Wiley William ft Beyonce
Beyoncé lends her voice to a new version of ‘Mi Gente’, J Balvin and Willy William's hit single. With Queen Bey singing in both Spanish and English on the track, its star-studded music video racked up millions of streams in its first 24 hours, topping iTunes' sales chart and YouTube's trend ranking.
3. Feel it still – Portugal. The Man
The five-piece psych-pop band have scaled the alternative charts for more than a decade, but is now getting a taste of crossover success with ‘Feel It Still’, the swinging second single off their latest effort, ‘Woodstock’.
4. Stay Shining – Riky Rick, Cassper Nyovest, Professor, Major League & Ali Keys
‘Stay Shining’ has deep Kwaito influence and it features Major League, rapper Casper Nyovest, and hitmaker Professor. Riky Rick said recently in an interview that his music is influenced by Kwaito.
5. What lovers do – Maroon 5 & SZA
Maroon 5 have mastered the art of the music video, and ‘What Lovers Do’ featuring SZA is their latest unique visual offering. SZA lures lead singer Adam Levine into the depths of the ocean as a mermaid. The duo then hang ten on surfboards and play poker in a casino before Levine turns into King Kong in a fit of rage.
6. Lemon – N.E.R.D and Rihanna
‘Lemon’ is a song by American band N.E.R.D and Barbadian singer Rihanna. It comes from N.E.R.D's upcoming fifth studio album, ‘No One Ever Really Dies’. When N.E.R.D. and Rihanna's surprise collaboration ‘Lemon’ dropped, it came with a powerful video too.
7. Reggaeton Lento – CNCO and little Mix
The second remix version of the song features additional vocals by British girl group Little Mix. It was released on 18 August 2017. The song debuted at number five on the UK Singles Chart, becoming CNCO's first top ten single and Little Mix's twelfth.
8. Feels – Calvin Harris, Pharrell, Katy Perry and Big Sean
Calvin Harris' ‘Feels’, featuring Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry and Big Sean, became his fourth No. 1 entry on the Billboard 100 and first since last year's ‘This Is What You Came For’.
9. Wolves – Selena Gomez and Marshmello
It's been a rollercoaster year for Selena Gomez, but the singer and actress is ending the year on a high note. Selena Gomez was named 'Woman of the Year' at the Billboard Women in Music awards in Los Angeles on 30 November 2017. Despite her personal struggles, Selena released four new songs in 2017, including 'Bad Liar', which is at number 34 on the Coca-Cola Top 40, and 'Wolves', at number 14 on the chart.
10. Questions – Chris Brown
Breezy used Kevin Lyttle's 2004 hit 'Turn Me On' as inspiration for his new club banger and after rumours on social media, the singer has revealed the truth behind the song.
11. Spirit – Kwesta ft Wale
We can't get over Kwesta's new single with Wale. The single dropped in October and is off his new album, which features major US collaborations with the likes of Wale‚ Rick Ross, and Tory Lanez.
12. Man’s not hot – Big Shaq
‘Man's Not Hot’ is a song by British comedian Michael Dapaah. It is his first single released under the name Big Shaq. It samples ‘Let's Lurk’ by 67 featuring Giggs. The song has been certified silver in the UK by the BPI, indicating 200,000 combined sales and streams. The music video has also gained over 87-million views on YouTube.
13. Tip Toe – Jason Derulo ft French Montana
With a reggae-style beat and featuring French Montana, the track covers much of the same ground that he did with Nicki Minaj on ‘Swalla’. This track will slow down the dance floor but will still heat things up with those sexy moves.
14. Dirty Sexy Money – David Guetta, Afrojack ft Charlie XCX and French Montana
Produced by Guetta and Afrojack, the track finds French revealing how much he's willing to spend on a girl. "What you need, I got it/Louis shoes, cop boots, top down, you/Diamond juice, all I see is you, right now, you/All I want is you, you/Tunnel vision, you, you/All I need is you, I'ma put it on you," he raps. Billboard.com describes the song as ‘Naughty pop music with a punch and a side of '90s nostalgia.’
15. Saved by the Summer – Goodluck
South African live trio, GoodLuck, hold onto summer and the warm weather with warm dance-pop single, ‘Saved By The Summer’. With a sound that fuses influences from electronic, pop, reggae, and alternative music, GoodLuck have a style that draws an eclectic fanbase together and their nostalgic new single, ‘Saved By The Summer’ demonstrates just that.
You can see GoodLuck, Shekinah, and Jimmy Nevis at the Coca-Cola Taste Summer Beach Festival in association with East Coast Radio from 21st to 23rd December at uShaka Marine Beach. The festival promises fun, games, music, and entertainment for the whole family.
