It’s summer time and what better way to celebrate the holiday season and create fantastic summer memories than with some good music?

One South African band who seems to love the summer season is live electronic trio, Goodluck. The SAMA-winning band consists of Juliet Harding, Matthew O’Connell, and Ben Peters.

2017 was a great year for the band. In addition to covering Drake’s hit ‘Passionfruit’ and then going on to release a four-minute video, they also managed to sign their first global record deal with Ultra Music Records in the USA and Sony B1 Recordings in Germany.

The band is well-known amongst many South Africans and have already earned eight chart number 1’s over the past four years, and also received over four-million plays on popular streaming service, Spotify.

In addition to making appearances throughout South Africa and internationally, the trio will be performing live at the upcoming Coca-Cola Taste Summer Beach Festival in association with East Coast Radio.

Ahead of their performance, we had a chat with them to find out what summer means to them and to talk about their ‘Saved by The Summer’ music video.

Q: Share a special summer memory with us…

A: ‘Our holidays in Plett are always memorable. We love to surf, spend time on the beach, and relax after a full year of touring and back-to-back shows around South Africa and abroad.’

Q: Tell us your funniest beach moment…

A: ‘Jules lost her bikini top in the surf. She didn’t realise it until she was halfway out of the water. An old lady came running towards her with a towel to cover up.’

Q: Are you guys swimmers or a tanners?

A: ‘Swimmers’

Q: What would we find in Goodluck’s beach bag?

A: ‘Sunscreen, a GoodLuck cap, water for hydration, and surfboard wax.’

Q: What’s on Goodluck’s summer playlist?

A: ‘Anything old school such as Groove Amada and Faithless. We have also been listening to the Beatles.’

Q: Other than your performances, do you guys have any other plans while you’re in KZN?

A: ‘No, we’re travelling in-and-out on the same day as we are touring and need to get back to the Eastern Cape. But we love KZN and wish we could stay longer - maybe next time?’

Q: Tell us a bit about the inspiration behind the magical video ‘Saved By The Summer’?

A: ‘We collaborated with Sean Kitching. We have been avid followers of his channel on YouTube and we felt he would be the best person to film and compile the video. The video was filmed in Bali where Sean is based. We felt he nailed it!’

Q: What’s on the cards for the new year?

A: ‘We will take our annual leave in January and thereafter we have loads of plans such as international touring and building a massive music studio in Cape Town. Our year is going to be filled with lots of exciting stuff in and around South Africa.’
