In this week’s KZN Future50, we met Brett Challenor, the founder of Stealth Kayaks and we learn about the importance of creating a business that is fuelled by something you are passionate about.

As an avid sportsman, Brett has built a business that combines his passion and experience, and solved a very specific problem.

After returning to South Africa from Australia where he was a World Champion lifesaver, Brett realised that by using the technology of the surf ski he could build a kayak that would beat anything available on the local market.

The team at Stealth Kayaks now produce arguably the best kayaks in the country.

So, why start a business based on something you are passionate about?

Starting a business that is strongly aligned with your passions can offer several significant advantages and benefits. Here are some reasons why it's important to pursue a business that aligns with your passions:

  • Intrinsic Motivation: When you are passionate about your business, you are more likely to be intrinsically motivated. This means you'll find joy and satisfaction in the work itself, not just in the financial rewards. This intrinsic motivation can help you stay committed and persevere through challenges.
  • Resilience: Passion can provide you with the energy and determination needed to overcome obstacles and setbacks. When you face difficulties, your passion for your business can be a powerful driving force to keep you going.
  • Knowledge and Expertise: If you're passionate about a particular subject or industry, you likely have a deep understanding of it. This knowledge and expertise can give you a competitive advantage, as you'll be better equipped to make informed decisions and provide value to your customers.
  • Creativity and Innovation: Passion often fuels creativity and innovation. When you are deeply interested in your field, you're more likely to come up with unique ideas and solutions that can set your business apart from competitors.
  • Customer Connection: When your business aligns with your passions, it's easier to connect with your target audience. Your enthusiasm and genuine interest in your products or services can resonate with customers, leading to stronger relationships and brand loyalty.
  • Long-term Commitment: Entrepreneurship can be challenging and demanding. Starting a business based on your passions can help you stay committed for the long term. You're less likely to burn out or lose interest because you genuinely enjoy what you're doing.

  • Personal Fulfillment: Building a business around your passions can lead to a deep sense of personal fulfillment and satisfaction. It allows you to pursue your interests and live a more purposeful life.
  • Networking and Collaboration: When you're passionate about your industry or field, you're more likely to engage with others who share your interests. This can lead to valuable networking opportunities and potential collaborations that can benefit your business.
  • Adaptability: In the face of changing market conditions or emerging trends, your passion can drive you to adapt and evolve your business strategies to stay relevant.
  • Inspiration for Others: Your passion and enthusiasm can inspire others, including employees, partners, and even customers. People are drawn to businesses and leaders who are genuinely passionate about what they do.

While aligning your business with your passions can offer numerous advantages, it's important to remember that entrepreneurship also involves challenges and risks.

Passion alone may not guarantee success; you'll still need a solid business plan, effective execution, and adaptability.

However, having passion as a foundation can provide you with the motivation and resilience needed to navigate the entrepreneurial journey with enthusiasm and dedication.

How can the KZN Community support Stealth Kayaks?

During Covid, the Stealth Kayaks team built a range of leisure kayaks, which are perfectly suited for the hotels where kayaking is enjoyed by thousands of tourists every year.

They are looking to identify all the distributors who support these resorts – especially those that feed into the East Indian Ocean islands such as Mauritius, Seychelles, Maldives Reunion Island – to discuss how the Stealth Kayaks team can provide kayaks as a service.

Ensuring year round, top quality, managed and maintained kayaks.

Do you know anyone in the big resort chains? Connect them to Brett and let’s make magic happen – thereby supporting our local KZN business and community!
