Jam-packed weekend in Durban

Jam-packed weekend in Durban

There’s a lot happening in the 031 this weekend. Two of South Africa’s top acts are in town, plus it is Diwali and Halloween weekend. Make sure you don’t miss a thing and pencil in your “must do” events now.

THURSDAY:

IRON FIST SALE

The Iron Fist sample sale marks the first retail sample sale of the season. You’ve got four days to get down to their Head Quarters to grab yourself a bargain. There’s Men’s and Ladieswear. Shoes and accessories. Even if the grunge skater label doesn’t quite gel with your sense of style it’s always worth a look for the label cautious teenager in your brood, who might deserve a Christmas gift.

Starts Thursday 10AM and runs to Sunday 6pm at 1221 Umgeni Road. More details here

FRIDAY:

DOCKLANDS NIGHT MARKET

This poor market seems jinxed; it literally pours with rain or howls with wind whenever this market is set to take place. The great news is, the weather is looking fine for Friday night and the market is partially undercover. All you have to do is mosey on down to the Docklands Hotel where Durban’s finest crafters will be waiting.

Friday 1 November, kicks off at 5PM @ Docklands Hotel in Mahatma Ghandi Drive.

Spankin Monkeys perform at Ollies Pub & Grill in 'Toti on Friday. Entry is free. You can also catch Salty Dog at the Royal Natal Yacht Club off Margaret Mncadi Avenue (Victoria Embankment) from 7.30pm. Entry is free.

PASCAL & PEARCE @ TOKIO

Tokio Nightclub has spent the past few weeks getting ready for summer and this Friday night they’re ready to get this summer started by enlisting the help of the hottest DJ duo Mzanzi has to offer. Yup, Pascal & Pearce will be in the hood so be ready for a bit of bootie shake. Obviously you have to be over 18 to attend. For more details check out the event on Facebook

SATURDAY:

I HEART MARKET

It’s that time of the month where creatives and Durban’s cool kids descend on Moses Mahbida Stadium for the I Heart Market on the Imbizo Lawns. The market starts at around 9am and ends at 3pm. It really is one of the best ways to spend a Saturday morning. But there’s even better news, if you are feeling a little delicate after Pascal & Pearce then pencil the market it in for Sunday. Sunday is World Remembrance Day so there will be an additional (once off) market on Sunday too. How awesome is that?

GOODLUCK NEW ALBUM TOUR

Remember I said us Durban folk could look forward to two hot acts this weekend? Well GoodLuck are the second musos you need to catch. They are a crazy good electro band that has rocked Durban a few times before. They’ll be at LIVE this Saturday night playing some old stuff but most importantly sharing a bunch of their new stuff. I think this gig is going to be a real banger so maybe plan ahead and book your tickets online here. We've managed to get our hands on a couple of tickets to give away. Email me at [email protected] with the subject line 'GoodLuck tickets' and they could be yours!

TACO ZULU DAY OF THE DEAD

Hands down Taco Zulu host the best Halloween parties. Halloween happens to fall over their birthday so they go all out. Unfortunately there are no, nada, zero VIP tickets available but you should be able to pay entry at the door. Do not for a second think that no one else will be dressing up. The Taco staff takes this party very seriously. Last year I styled the staff for the occasion and, without giving too much away, this year is set to be just magical.

Also on Saturday is the launch of SA's first original rum at Zanzibar Restaurant in the Westwood Mall. There is free tasting from 7pm, and an open mic session comprising live recitals of modern poetry.

SUNDAY

BULWER MARKET

This little market is a real little hidden gem. It happens on the first Sunday of every month at Bulwer Park in Glenwood. There are some really eclectic stallholders and the food is phenomenal. There’s usually a really impressive jazz band to add to the ambiance, there’s hay bales scattered around so you can sit and enjoy your market food and I’m 99% sure there’s a jumping castle for the kids. The market starts at 9am and ends at 2pm, don’t be late!
