Witnesses needed in Umhlanga hit-and-run

We start today's Crimewatch with an appeal for witnesses to an almost fatal hit-and-run at about 2.30am on Sunday this past weekend.

It was in Umhlanga Village at the corner of Lighthouse and Chartwell. The driver of a green Toyota Tazz with a number plate starting with ND 401 slammed in Adrian Verbiest and then hit a pole across the street and sped off. Adrian - who'd just finished a work shift at a local pub - has suffered a badly broken leg and had his pelvis fractured and teeth knocked out. He is currently in hospital. If anyone can help with footage or anything please assist. Adrian's brother Gilbert can be reached on 076 431 6082

New hijacking tactic?

Ben has reported what he believes is a new method of hijacking in Hilton recently. It happened very close to the top of Groenekloof Road, just outside Laddsworth Primary School on Sunday. An individual lies in the road feigning injury with accomplices waiting in a car nearby. As someone stops their car to check on the individual lying on the road, he/she jumps up and the hijacking takes place by gun/knifepoint while car is still running. Very disturbing incident.

'Dead domestic scam' alert

Roy missed Monday's Crimewatch where we mentioned the resurgence of the so-called 'dead domestic scam', but had someone try this out on his wife on Sunday. They'd been called saying that their domestic worker had died of a heart attack. They subsequently got hold of her, and she said someone claiming to be from Vodacom had called her at 6 that morning informing her that her number had been stolen and to leave her phone off that day, which she did. Roy isn't sure how the guy got his wife's cellphone number and number of her other employer. He's chasing this up with the police.
