Hijack sob-story conman gets around

Hijack sob-story conman gets around

The hijack-victim conman we mentioned on Monday is quite well know it seems. He's been spotted recently on the Durban Beachfront and Westwood Mall and Village Mall parking lots.

Listener Barrie heard Monday's broadcast and emailed in to tell of his experience with this man this past Saturday. He was in the lower parking lot at the Village Mall driving around in his white Kia Soul (not a Peugeot as we said the other day) with an NT registration until he saw Barrie and stopped. Barrie says it seemed quite obvious he was cruising for potential victims. The car has dents along the passenger side, a broken small rear quarter window and was quite dirty. The man, a white male in his 40's, told Barrie much the same near-hijacking incident story as he'd told Mason, and said he'd been hit in the face and needed toll money to get home. He drove off as Barrie started taking photos. See above and below.

Then Velile says she was having a meal at one of the cafés in the La Lucia Mall on Sunday afternoon. She'd just sat down with a friend when a neatly dressed black man in his early 20's sat at a table next to them and ordered water and claimed to the waiter he was waiting for someone. He interrupted Velile and her friend and told them a sob story about him having a job interview in Joburg and he had booked his bus there and back but was short of cash for overnight accommodation. Velile's made the same trip before moving here, and believes it was a con-story as there are numerous same day buses between Durban and Jo'burg. Well we don't know for sure, but she says they quickly dismissed him and warned the restaurant manager.
