We've seen some outrageously priced things before, but none as ridiculous as this.

This would have to be made out of the most incredible cheese in the world for it to be worthy of its price tag.

And even then we are not sure we would pay to eat it.

Serendipity 3, a New York City restaurant, is making the headlines again over their 'Quintessential Grilled Cheese Sandwich’.

The price is not the only thing that makes this sandwich special. The ingredients make up for the price and contribute towards the record of being the most expensive sandwich in the world, according to the Guinness World Records.

"The Quintessential Grilled Cheese Sandwich starts with two thick slices of French Pullman Champagne Bread made with Dom Perignon Champagne and 23k edible gold flakes, buttered with grass-fed white truffle butter. The sandwich is filled with thick slices of rare Caciocavallo Podolico Cheese, made in Southern Italy from the milk of the Podolica cow, who graze free-range, feeding on strongly aromatic grasses such as fennel, licorice, juniper, laurel bay and wilder strawberries, infusing the milk with these sweet aromatic perfumes." We agree, that's a mouthful, but wait, there is more. We were steering in the right direction about the cheese, because there are only about 25,000 of these special cows that produce the cheese used in the sandwich. And get this, they only lactate during May and June...

"The sandwich is then toasted until golden crisp and cut into triangles, the edges of the sandwich gilded in 23k edible gold. The sandwich is served on a Baccarat crystal plate with a Baccarat glass filled with South African Lobster Tomato Bisque as a dipping sauce, swirled with crème fraîche and truffle oil. This bisque is made with South African Losbet Trails - known as the best in the world, along with San Marzano tomatoes from Italy." (Instagram)

Now we understand why you pay that much for it!

The unique and very luxurious nature of the ingredients that go into this grilled cheese sandwich mean that the restaurant requires a 48-hour advance notice when ordering.

Talk about making something ordinary extraordinary...
