When a child turns down physical affection from a parent

It's a harsh reality when a parent is hit with the realisation that their little one is not so little anymore and they turn down physical affection. It can be a huge blow to any parent when that moment arrives.

This past Monday, Mr T and I hosted our eldest son's end of year party at our home. It was a pure joy as 30-odd kids and parents hit the pool on a gorgeous day in KZN.

During the day, my boy walked around the pool past me and I requested a walk-by kiss and cuddle, which he turned down, saying it was "embarrassing". You may have heard my heart break at that moment.

I was so taken aback. This had never happened before, and at eight-years-old, I thought I’d have at least five years until this would happen. He did offer a hug, which I took, obviously.

To give you some context on his side, he was with a little girl from his class which he may or may not have keen affection for, so I get it that this was the ultimate test. The next morning he did, however, apologise for turning me down (bless his heart) and requested random cuddles ever since. Yes, please!
