Have you ever forgotten a loved one's special date?

Sometimes our memory fails us at the most inopportune times, especially when all eyes are on you and there's no way to escape safely.

We're all busy in this rat race called life and have a lot to think about constantly, hence occasionally forgetting an important day is not an unforgivable offense. It's not that we love them less but hey it's life, right?

How would you feel if your age was forgotten at your own birthday party? Well, I recently attended a birthday party this past weekend and as the cake was being presented to the birthday girl on a crowded dance floor, she squealed that the number candles on the cake were in fact not the age she was celebrating, but rather a year older. Her partner had bought the numbers 47 instead of 46. We had a good laugh and she snapped the top of the number 7 to make it look like the number 1.

To be fair I never know how old I am. I feel no older than 16 although my body tells me differently.

Here are a few tips to save you if you find yourself in a similar situation:

  • Spouse: If he/she isn’t offended, take them out for a nice dinner and a movie or let them take off with their buddies for a day shortly after their birthday.
  • Mother: If you miss Mom's big day, her feelings could be hurt, so be sure to call her and apologise. Take a trip over to see her and make sure you carry a gift and have an apology ready.
  • Your child: A gift, cake, and a party could smooth the waters, or perhaps a nice cash surprise and an opportunity to spend it on what he/she wants most

In any event, I suggest that you mark special days on every calendar and avoid the drama.
