These issues are particularly concerning given that they are targeting security beams and gate motors.
Charnel Hattingh, Group Head of Marketing and Communications for Fidelity ADT, told BusinessTech that Pretoria is a notable concern, while surrounding areas have also seen spikes.
Hatting explained that criminals focus on outdoor security beams in an attempt to immobilise security systems. This is reportedly done to make future break-in attempts easier.
In addition to the outdoor security beams, gate motor thefts have increased recently as these items can be resold and repurposed. Criminals also constantly change neighbourhoods to avoid being caught.
Hattingh explained that overgrown trees and bushes add to the issues as they offer some protection for criminals to work under.
More and more incidents are being reported across South Africa.
“We want to alert all residents and ensure that security measures are ramped up,” Hatting shared.
How to protect yourself
With a staggering 397 home burglaries and 70 house robberies reported daily in South Africa, it's crucial for homeowners to take proactive measures to secure their properties. Here are some tips to help you safeguard your home:
Trim overgrown vegetation: Keep your surroundings tidy to prevent hiding spots for potential burglars.
Lock gate motors: Secure your gate motors to prevent unauthorised access.
Regularly test alarms and panic buttons: Ensure your security systems are functioning properly to respond quickly in an emergency.
Understanding the Risks
Burglaries: Break-ins when occupants are away, often resulting in theft and property damage.
House robberies: Face-to-face confrontations that may involve threats or violence.
Take Action
Here are some important tips to take into consideration:
Secure outdoor detection beams: Install brackets to prevent tampering and ensure early warning systems are triggered.
Activate alarms and beams: Even when at home, to provide an added layer of security.
Report stolen equipment: Inform the police about stolen beams or security devices to help track crime trends and increase patrols.
