Sassa cracks down on undisclosed income among grant recipients
Updated | By Stacey & J Sbu
Sassa has taken action against undisclosed income among grant recipients. It’s important to check your income and submit the required documents to avoid grant suspension.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has launched a verification campaign for grant recipients suspected of not declaring additional income. Beneficiaries who fail to comply with the verification process risk having their grants suspended or permanently removed.
According to IOL, Sassa collaborates with other government institutions to cross-check financial records. They monitor bank account activity and identify inconsistencies in beneficiaries' reported income. Red flags are raised when a beneficiary's bank statement shows deposits or transfers exceeding the allowed threshold.
Required Documents for Verification
Identification: Certified copy of ID document or smart ID card.
Bank Statements: Bank statements for the past three months for all active accounts.
Employment Proof: Proof of discharge from last employer or sworn affidavit.
Child Support: Certified birth certificates of children linked to the grant and affidavits confirming biological parents' whereabouts.
Property Ownership: Documentation of property ownership, rates and taxes for unoccupied property.
Additional Income: Paperwork reflecting additional income.
Consequences of Non-Compliance
There are a number of repercussions for non-compliance, these include:
Grant Suspension: Immediate suspension of grant payments.
Permanent Removal: Continued non-compliance may lead to permanent loss of grants.
Repayment: Beneficiaries may be required to repay funds received fraudulently.
Legal Action: Possible legal action or criminal charges.
Sassa grants are means-tested, meaning eligibility is determined by an individual's financial situation. Beneficiaries are must inform Sassa of any changes to their financial circumstances, including new income streams. Undisclosed income undermines the integrity of the system, potentially depriving those who truly need assistance.
