Proud moment for South Africa as our high school team earns top medals and achieves the country’s best performance in 25 years at the Maths Olympiad.

A team of South African high schoolers have made the country proud at the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO).
The olympiad, which took place in Australia, ran from 10 to 20 July and is one of the largest and most significant competitions in the world.
According to the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) high school students from more than 100 countries across the globe participated in this competition.
Out of the 110 participating countries, the SA team finished 38th. This is the best position we’ve held in the past 25 years.
The actual competition happened over two days. In these two days, each student was presented with three tough mathematical problems which they had to solve in four and a half hours each day.
Following the competition, students, leaders and their teachers worked together to double-check their answers to ensure a fair and correct marking process.
Participants are then ranked on the score they achieve, with top students taking home a medal.
Below are the results of the participating students as per the SAMF:
- Youkyum Kim (Grade 12, Reddam House Durbanville) – Silver Medal
- Moied Baleg (Grade 12, The Settlers High School) – Bronze Medal
- Eli Williams (Grade 11, Westerford High School) – Bronze Medal
- Pocoyo Pun (Grade 10, Elkanah House) – Bronze Medal
- Yian Xu (Grade 12, Redhill High School) – Bronze Medal
- Ellen Grant-Smith (Grade 12, Westerford High School) – Honourable Mention
