Red flags in the workplace that could cost you your job
Updated | By Stacey & J Sbu
Workplace habits matter. It's important to avoid behaviours that signal emotional immaturity or disconnection from modern workplace dynamics.

In today's evolving work environment, certain habits that were once overlooked or even encouraged are now seen as serious red flags by employers.
According to Jason Morris, a business expert at My Profit Engine, the bar for professional behaviour has definitely moved. IOL reports that employers increasingly value emotional professionalism and handling workplace friction as equally important as technical output.
Companies are tracking emotional intelligence metrics because one person's unprofessional behaviour can derail an entire team's dynamics. Morris identifies five workplace red flags that could signal deeper issues with self-awareness, adaptability, and professional growth potential.
These include avoiding video during virtual meetings, complaining openly about workload, needing constant direction, saying "that's not my job," and over-explaining simple mistakes.
Avoiding video during virtual meetings can come across as disengaging or a lack of confidence. Complaining about workload in open meetings signals poor boundaries and unprofessional emotional regulation. Needing constant direction shows an inability to prioritise or think strategically.
Saying "that's not my job" can signal inflexibility and poor team awareness. Over-explaining mistakes can show defensiveness and a lack of confidence.
Experts like Jason Buechel, CEO of Whole Foods and Todd Graves, CEO of Raising Cane's, agree that certain behaviours can be detrimental to an employee's career. Employees who are not receptive to different points of view or job hop too frequently can raise red flags.
The bottom line is that modern-day employees are expected to understand how their work connects to broader goals. Professional behaviour, emotional intelligence and adaptability are crucial in today's workplace.
