Mental health matters: Where to get free help in KZN

For fear of stigma or others, mental health is often ignored by South Africans. If you or someone you know may be in need of assistance, this is where you can go for free.

The mental health crisis in South Africa is not one to be ignored. Approximately 16.5% of adults in the country experience common mental disorders every year.

In addition, research has revealed that around 30.3% of South Africans may suffer from a mental disorder in their lives but the majority of them do not get the care that they require.

Sapien Labs published the The Annual Mental State of the World Report 2021 which revealed that SA ranks as one of the worst countries in the world when it comes to mental health.

The most widespread class of disorders are as follows according to The South African Stress and Health (SASH) study:

  • Anxiety disorders at 15.8%

  • Substance use disorder at 13.3%

  • Mood disorders at 9.8%

  • Alcohol abuse at 11.4%

  • Depressive disorder at 9.8%

  • Agoraphobia without panic at 9.8%

While about 30.3% of South Africans may suffer from or experience a mental disorder in their lifetime, most of them won’t seek professional assistance.

LifeLine Durban works with emotional trauma and individual crisis. According to their website, they have a range of services that focus on supporting and/or developing individuals with the aim of enabling them to cope effectively with emotional trauma.

Folweni and Mariannridge

Folweni Clinic/Mariannridge Clinic. According to Northglen News, these clinics provide free mental health services for adults and children.

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG)
