Interestingly, the small alligator's snout had been tied shut, presumably to avoid unwanted biting.

Reuters reports that the ritual marriage -  a prayer pleading for nature's bounty - likely dates back centuries to pre-Hispanic times among Oaxaca state's Chontal and Huave indigenous communities.

"We ask nature for enough rain, for enough food, that we have fish in the river," said Sosa, mayor of the small fishing village on Oaxaca's Pacific coast.

The age old ritual has been met with mixed reactions online, however, no one can dispute how much this mayor cares for his community and tradition.

"It gives me so much happiness and makes me proud of my roots," said Elia Edith Aguilar, known as the godmother who organised the wedding.

We can’t wait to see what next for this fascinating town rich with tradition.
