Durban's marginalised communities take centre stage in powerful film
Updated | By Stacey & J Sbu
God's Work, a film about Durban's marginalised communities, is sparking conversations about homelessness and societal responsibility.

God's Work is a powerful film that sheds light on the lives of Durban's marginalised communities. Award-winning filmmaker Michael James collaborated with a group of homeless men to produce a feature film that dynamically delves into the lives and experiences of those often overlooked by society.
The film premiered at the 46th Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) to a full-house audience, showcasing James' commitment to telling the stories of those who call the streets and dilapidated buildings their home. God's Work follows the character of Simphiwe and his friends as they navigate survival, brotherhood and the universal human desire to be seen.
James takes viewers deep into the heart of Durban's marginalised communities, shedding light on the grim and troubled realities of those who are often outcasts.
Through his film, James hopes to inspire viewers around the world to look inward and question the way in which they live their lives.
God's Work has been selected to compete for the best South African feature film at DIFF, and will also be screened at Bioscope in Johannesburg and Labia in Cape Town, reports Good Things Guy.
James notes that he hopes the film will create a broader dialogue about the ways in which cinema has kept the marginalised unseen and challenge some of the ways we talk about homelessness in society.
