The Comrades Marathon Association has released a statement about false reports alleging that two deaths occurred at the 2025 event.

The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) released a statement about reports of two deaths during the 2025 edition of the renowned race this past Sunday, 8 June.
According to the CMA medical team, no deaths were recorded at the 2025 Comrades Marathon.
CMA General Manager Alain Dalais said: "As can be expected from an event of this nature and size, there were some cases of runners being transferred to hospital from the route, for various medical reasons. The CMA medical, emergency, safety and health protocols are excellent and focused on the safety of all runners.”
CMA further distanced itself from any fake news and rumours circulating on various platforms.
“The CMA distances itself from any fake news or rumours doing the rounds, and suggests that our community rely on reputable sources for information – starting with our own channels,” Dalais concluded.
More than 22,000 runners took part in the down run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on Sunday.
