Brewing success: Mduduzi Mvana steams ahead
The brewmaster has been crowned! Mduduzi Mvana has nabbed the top spot in the KZN Regional Barista Championship.
Mduduzi Mvana, a shift supervisor at Starbucks, has been crowned the Regional Champion of KwaZulu-Natal in the Starbucks Regional Barista Championship.
The competition, which celebrates coffee knowledge, creativity and passion, saw 83 partners from 72 stores across South Africa showcasing their expertise in latte art, coffee quality, and storytelling.
Mvana, who has been working at Starbucks for nearly two and a half years, beat out six other finalists to take the top spot. The next stop is the National Barista Championship in June. Siphamandla Betana and Kabelo Majoro will accompany him. The winner of the national title will go on to compete in the Starbucks EMEA Championships in London.
Mvana's motivation for participating in the competition stems from his desire to prove that one's background doesn't determine one's future.

"It's all about mindset and seizing the opportunity," he says. "I want to be the champion and be the best in the coffee world, because I believe that would give me exposure to more coffee experiences; and add those experiences, with my craft, to change the world."
The Starbucks Regional Barista Championship is a platform for partners to showcase their skills and passion for coffee. The competition starts with Store Championships, followed by District Championships, and finally, Regional Championships.
