Thandolwethu speaks to SA-born director of new Trevor Noah film

Trevor Noah continues to fly the South African flag high. Not only is his book: Born A Crime is going to be made into a film, but the director of the movie is born and bred on home soil.

Liesl Tommy is a sought-after theatre director who was nominated for a Tony award for directing: Eclipsed on Broadway. An achievement that made history, as she was the first woman of colour to ever be nominated.

Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, who will star as Noah’s mother in the film, shared the news of Tommy directing the film on Instagram earlier this year:

Thandolwethu had the opportunity to speak exclusively to Liesl Tommy while she was in New York. The two caught up on the importance of this film, working with Lupita, and what she misses most from home.
