A KZN mom is divided as to whether to buy her son his first car for his upcoming birthday. While she thinks it's a good idea, her husband can't help but think it's wrong for her to consider it.

As parents, we try to provide the best we can for our children and will go the extra mile - especially when it comes to spoiling them with gifts and treats. However, it's good to remember that there is a fine line between 'just a gift' and choosing to teach responsibility.

A KZN mom recently shared a WhatsApp voice note with me about her son's upcoming 21st birthday. She so badly wants to buy him his first car, but her husband doesn't quite agree, as it's not 'teaching him responsibility'.
I would love to buy my kids their first car like my folks did for me. If as parents we aren't able to provide, we like to think we could match buck-for-buck and help all three of our kids to get their first set of wheels.

I can so remember the thrill of releasing the handbrake on my first solo car ride. My first major road trip was in a red Chico down the road to my matric rage. I had peroxide hair and not a worry in the world as I took to the open highway in the pouring rain. How my folks managed, I'm not quite sure.
