#FitU with Phindi Gule: The importance of setting a Goal and a Training Programme

Often people don’t think long and hard about WHY they are training and, as a result, there is never a plan. Think about how and why those New Year’s resolutions fall away - NO GOAL, NO PLAN! In this week's edition of #FitU, Phindi talks about the importance of planning and setting goals.
Whatever it is that you do in life, if it’s not LINKED to a goal, it’s bound to fail. The reason why you train or exercise has to be, amongst other things, personal. You need to be doing it because FIRST it’s important to you and linked to your GOAL.
Once you have that GOAL, train for it and forget what everyone else is doing - don't let the internet rush you.

If you are training for a certain distance or weight, you need to slowly improve week by week (a suggested increase is 10% each week to avoid overtraining and injuries). If you are more experienced and training for a certain race, make sure your training speaks to the event, e.g. Training for the Soweto Marathon means you should be training in heat and on hilly routes. If training for a stage race (multi days), you need to do long runs on both Saturday and Sunday.

Keeps you disciplined
