Six reasons why Bafana Bafana failed to qualify for the World Cup

Benedict Ngwenya lists the six reasons why South Africa have yet again disappointed the nation by failing to qualify for a major tournament.

Poor development - The current crop of players isn't good enough to compete at the highest level. The country can't even produce players who can compete in top leagues like La Liga, English Premier League, and Bundesliga. Where are the new Benni McCarthys, Shaun Bartletts, Lucas Radebes, Delron Buckleys, and Aaron Mokoenas of the country?

Sacking Shakes Mashaba - SAFA sacked Shakes in the middle of the qualification campaign and to make matters worse, it took them eight months to replace him. That gave the Stuart Baxter no time to prepare for the rest of the qualifiers. 

Lack of patriotism - Most players look at the national team as a quick money making tool. They were promised a R60,000 bonus each if they won the match on Friday night, and R30,000 if they drew (which wouldn't have helped the qualification cause, so that is a strange bonus?). That shows how much South Africans put money first.

Disrespect  - Thulani Serero said he will only honour the Bafana Bafana call up if he's guaranteed game time. How can you do that to your country? Those are the types of players that SAFA needs to disown. 

Unavailability of key players and wrong team selection - The unavailability of key players like Bongani Zungu, Thulani Hlatshwayo, Ramahlwe Mphahlele, and Rivaldo Coetzee forced the coach to try out new combinations and he got it horribly wrong. It is as simple as that. 

Poor finishing - We had countless goalscoring opportunities, but a lack of quality in attacking areas let us down.
