Now this is an epic #ThrowbackThursday! We are sharing the project by Netflix and The Sowetan newspaper celebrating SA entertainment legends in a 'Now vs Then' series featuring our current superstars.

Netflix and The Sowetan collaborated to recreate some of SA entertainment's iconic moments captured in the 80s and 90s. Seeing all those stars - some alive, some late - loudly expressive in wardrobe and their make-up or even in their 'radness', surely does inspire artists in the present to be as fearless.

One cannot help but feel nostalgic at the sight of these photographs in black and white. This specific project was done to celebrate Sowetan's 40th anniversary of sharing content with South Africa.

One can imagine it went from simply print media (newspaper) to a multimedia platform (digital newspaper, social media platforms). It is definitely worth celebrating the beautiful years of the paper.

This series of photographs highlights the excellence and talent from South African musicians, actors, and artists. Netflix uses local talent from the local series Blood & Water, How To Ruin Christmas: The Wedding, and JIVA!, among others, to celebrate the iconic moments in history from veteran artists.

Have a look at all the beautiful Now vs Then photographs:

As you can see, Brenda Fassie, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Johnny Clegg, jazz group Harari, and many more were honoured for their contribution to SA's entertainment legacy.

In this part of the series, we see that photographs had begun to be colourful:

The editor of The Sowetan, Nwabisa Makunga, said they were excited to give fans the best throwback.

He continues: "For forty years The Sowetan has captured the rhythm of SA entertainment. We have celebrated the lives and times of our most revered stars and we continue to tell the story of their evolution as they take on world stages. On this milestone anniversary year, we are proud and excited to partner with Netflix to take you down memory lane, to celebrate decades of exceptional talent and to showcase the future of South African arts”.
