SAPS officers busted in washing powder heist

Omo-gosh! Officers in Limpopo got busted for stealing washing powder from an overturned truck!

ARRESTED SAPS
X: @SAPS

Just when you think South Africa cannot get any weirder, Limpopo steps in like, “Hold my Omo.”

In a plot twist sponsored by Surf, two SAPS officers and a police station cleaner have been arrested after allegedly helping themselves to heaps of washing powder from a crashed delivery truck.

Imagine explaining to your family that you got arrested for stealing washing powder. Soap-er suspicious!

According to police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba (who we assume is just as shocked as we are), the drama unfolded in Modimolle when a delivery truck overturned on 14 July.

Rather than doing what the badge says (you know, “serve and protect”), our uniformed trio allegedly decided to “load and collect.”

They reportedly packed bags of washing powder into a marked police van and drove away.

Apparently, nothing screams “guilty” like a getaway vehicle with flashing blue lights and a SAPS logo.

A formal complaint was laid by the truck driver (who probably thought he was hallucinating), which led to an internal investigation.

Lo and behold, some of the stolen goods were allegedly found chilling in one of the officers’ homes.

In his defense though, why wouldn’t you bring home 5kg of stolen Ariel like it’s Black Friday at Pick n Pay?

To add more bubbles to the brew, the police station’s cleaner was also caught in the soapy scandal.

The three suspects, aged between 49 and 55, now face charges of theft and defeating the ends of justice.

Sadly, no word yet on whether their bail conditions include not doing laundry.

Limpopo’s Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe, condemned the incident, saying it “undermines public trust in law enforcement”.

This is a very polite way of saying “Are you kidding me right now?”

The trio appeared in the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court on Monday (21 July), where they came clean.
