The 36-year-old wore the outfit in honour of all new mothers, but it was also a medical necessity to prevent her from developing blood clots.
The tennis icon said that the outfit made her look and feel like a warrior princess.
However, not everyone was happy with the attire.
According to UNILAD, French Tennis Federation (FTF) President, Bernard Guiducelli, issued a statement regarding her look.
We are going to nonetheless ask the manufacturers to let us know what [outfits are] coming, I believe we have sometimes gone too far. Serena’s outfit this year, for example, would no longer be accepted. You have to respect the game and the place.- Bernard Guiducelli
Following an uproar on social media, Nike finally hit back in support of Williams in a tweet.
You can take the superhero out of her costume, but you can never take away her superpowers. #justdoit pic.twitter.com/dDB6D9nzaD

Darren thinks that the federation is right. Rules are rules and just because she's Serena doesn't mean she doesn't have to follow the rules.
This is what social media had to say about 'catgate':
She should be allowed to wear anything she likes.

Men telling #SerenaWilliams she can't wear pants 2 work is so 2018 & so 1985(when men freaked out about Anne White's pantsuit Wimbledon)especially because Serena's pants r blood clot preventing compression leggings. Stop regulating the way we look for ur comfort! pic.twitter.com/wzsUB2ZYbW
She is a queen and should be allowed to dress in the attire she feels comfortable in👑👑👑
