New SAPS scam: Don’t fall for this!
Updated | By East Coast Breakfast
New scam alert! Scammers are pretending to be police officers to steal your info and money.

South Africans are being warned about a new scam doing the rounds, and it’s a sneaky one!
According to a report by The South African, scammers are pretending to be police officers to trick people into handing over money and personal information.
How the scam works:
Scammers send fake letters (often via WhatsApp) that look official, with the SAPS logo, real police station addresses, and sometimes even the names of real police officers.
The scam gets even trickier. The messages are tailored to your location, using names and addresses from your area to make it believable.
To make matters worse, before sending the message, scammers call you pretending to be police officers.
They’ll claim there’s a criminal case against you and that you need to pay a fee to make it disappear.
It’s all designed to scare you into paying up or sharing personal info like your ID number, bank details, or home address.
What you should know:
- The SAPS will never contact you via WhatsApp or video call.
- They won’t ask you to pay money to make a case go away.
- Never share your personal or banking details with anyone claiming to be a police officer over the phone.
If you get a message or call like this:
- Don’t respond
- Don’t pay anything
- Report it immediately at your nearest police station
Let’s stay sharp and help spread the word.
The more people know, the fewer victims these scammers can claim.
