Could SuperSport go solo? MultiChoice is considering sports-only DStv packages

MultiChoice is seriously looking into unbundling SuperSport from its DStv packages and offering a sports-only subscription option for customers.
This follows years of calls from South African viewers who’ve wanted tailor-made, affordable packages; especially for the sports lovers.

The pay-TV giant has faced major subscriber losses in recent years, driven by rising costs, tough economic conditions, and shifting consumer demands.
According to The South African, DStv has lost around 3 million subscribers in two years, including 1.2 million in the last financial year alone.
In response, MultiChoice Group CEO Calvo Mawela confirmed that the company is actively exploring whether a standalone sports package is a viable option for its business model.
“We’ve accelerated that project in terms of getting us to finalise which direction we’re going to take in this financial year,” Mawela said.
Currently, SuperSport is only available through DStv’s Premium package, priced at R949 per month.
Many subscribers either pause their subscriptions during sports off-seasons or cancel them entirely.

MultiChoice has admitted in financial reports that the rising cost of living has forced households to cut back on non-essential expenses, with DStv subscriptions often first on the list.
The feasibility study into a sports-only package is expected to conclude by March 2026.
