TBT: Danny Guselli chats to John Ellis from Tree63
Updated | By Udesha Moodley-Judhoo
What happened to one of South Africa's favourite local bands? Danny Guselli catches up with John Ellis, from the iconic band, Tree63, for a Throwback Thursday feture you don't want to miss...

It's Throwback Thursday, and Danny Guselli was reminiscing about a classic Durban band, Tree63.
In that moment, he thought about lead singer-songwriter, John Ellis.
The talented trio, John Ellis, Darryl Swart and Daniel Ornellas, formed Tree63 in Durban in 1997, and have not only imprinted on Durbanites but also bookmarked their music in the minds of most South Africans. Their Christian rock music left fans rocking to their hits such as ‘Treasure’, ‘Stumbling Stone’ and ‘A Million Lights’.
Their music attracted the attention of the US record label InPop Records, which led to their US album in 2000, hitting number one on US radio hits, followed by another win later that year at the Dove Awards for Rock Album of the Year.
Danny caught up with Ellis to find out what the band has been up to.
Danny: "John, welcome to the show here. What on earth are you doing now since those absolute classics?"
Ellis: "You would never believe this , but I'm actually in an Uber on the way to the airport to fly to Durban to play Tree63 songs in Durban."
Danny: " Where, how, how did this come about?"
Ellis: "So, there's a brand new theatre in Durban North called the Milkwood Theatre. And we are so excited to bring Tree63 Unplugged to the Milkwood Theatre tonight and tomorrow night. So 31st of July and 1st August, and it's been a bit under the radar, but we're finally coming... the tickets are looking pretty good to be mostly sold out, and we're just excited to bring these songs back to where they were written in the first place."
