Staying safe during the windy weather
Updated | By Udesha Moodley-Judhoo
KZN usually experiences windy weather towards the end of winter, but it seems the weather had other plans this time.

Alerts about weather warnings can cause some stress and panic for many people. Considering all our province has been through regarding weather damage, it's only natural.
ECR News reports, "The South African Weather Service says the severe cold snap is caused by a cut-off low-pressure system, which has accompanied thunderstorms, snow, and damaging winds."
It's best to stay aware and prepared in these circumstances. To minimise the damage caused, you should take precautionary measures ahead of the severe storms and damaging winds.
Here are some tips on how to stay safe during the stormy, windy weather.

1. Secure windows and doors
If you have loose windows or frames, and even if you don't, you should ensure that your windows and doors are safely latched. If the glass is loose, secure it with wooden boards or shutters.
2. Be prepared for power outages
Ensure all backup devices are charged and properly working ahead of the weather warnings. Keep extra batteries, candles, and flashlights on hand.
3. Stay clear of windows and doors
It is always advisable to steer clear of any openings to your home. Secure your family inside your home. Unpack warm blankets and sleeping gear so you can all stay warm.
Secure outside items that may fly in the wind and cause further damages.

4. Stay alert whilst driving
Try to avoid driving near trees or powerlines. These can be unsteady during the windstorm and might cause branches or even trees to fall.
If you don't have to be on the roads, stay indoors. Stay vigilant and alert for debris flying around. Besides causing imminent damage, debris like plastic and paper might interfere with your vision when driving. Hold the steering wheel tight; with winds such as these, it can be easy to lose control.
5. Stay informed
During bad weather, it's always a good idea to stay informed. Whether that is on social media or community groups' messaging, be sure to check for weather updates.
Check in on family members who are residing alone. Bring pets inside and stock up on perishables and non-perishables.
