Social media users respond to reckless bus driver in Clare Estate

When you think about public transportation, is safety the first thing that comes to mind?

Despite the dangers of some public transportation, most commuters in South Africa have no other choice.

They settle for the most cost-effective option, which doesn't always mean the safest option.

Taxi and bus commuters will be the first to admit they don't willingly leave their lives in the hands of their drivers, but for many, there is no alternative option.

A security vehicle's dash cam captured footage of a bus driver overtaking in the oncoming lane on a busy part of the Clare Estate bridge. The security driver was travelling in the right lane, behind a taxi, when they saw the bus pull up next to the vehicle and overtake.

Social media users had a mixed reaction to the video.

Some agreed that the bus driver was reckless and supported the stereotype that most professional driving permit (PDP) drivers didn't lawfully attain their licences. Others reacted with sarcasm, and some called out the security driver for not practising caution, saying that two wrongs don't make a right.

Since the traffic lights were not operational, the rule of law is that the intersection will operate as a four-way stop or in this case, a three-way stop. In this case, all three drivers were unlawful in their actions as all three should've stopped to let the taxi from the other road pass.

The comments got us thinking about how some motorists (not just public transport drivers) think they are above the law. This is why it is always best to practice a pause at a four-way stop intersection.
