Many people opt to use gas in their homes as a more affordable alternative to electricity

Gas is more economical, but it is also more reliable, given the shaky state of electricity in South Africa at times.

Both gas and electricity have pros and cons, but one of the biggest concerns about using gas in your home or work is safety

Therefore, before you use it in your home, you should be adequately educated about how to use gas and what to do if something goes wrong.

A video shared on social media shows how things can quickly go wrong when gas is mishandled.

A woman loses control of a gas cylinder and runs outdoors, leaving the cylinder open and releasing the fumes inside the home, causing an explosion. Fortunately, the doors and windows were open, which provided enough ventilation for the gas to escape and cause minimal damage.

You can check out these safety tips to avoidsomething like this from happening in your home.

1. Turn off the main valve on the gas cylinder immediately.

2. Ventilate the area – Open all windows and doors.

3. Do NOT turn any electrical switches, lights, or appliances on or off.

4. If you can’t stop the leak: Evacuate the house. Call the gas supplier or emergency services right away.

5. Keep fire sources away – No smoking, lighters, or sparks.
