Grandmother drops grandson off escalator

I was at a shopping centre on Sunday, and as I got onto the escalator and looked over the side, I thought about how dangerous they actually are.
There's a sheer drop!
But in saying that, what else can you do to make them safer? Build escalators with a higher side?
Then I read this story about an elderly woman who lost her balance at the top of the moving staircase while holding a baby.
The elderly lady fell and dropped the four-month-old over the handrail.
The incident happened in a department store in Shanghai, China. It has been reported that the escalator was running on power-save mode, and sped up when the grandmother stepped on.
The mother of the child rushed the baby to the hospital but unfortunately the baby died in they early hours of the morning.
Many took to social media to offer their condolences to the family while others urged that the accident serves as a warning to parents to use 'baby carriers'
