Uber driver charges man R700k for a 15 minute ride!

From a 6km trip to a 16,000km trip...

One of the things you would expect an Uber driver to be proficient in (other than driving) is directions.

And if this doesn't come naturally to them, we can understand because there is GPS, which is a great tool for all motorists.

But if you're an Uber or transport driver and are unable to work out the difference between a 6km trip and a 16,000km trip, then we think you may be in the wrong field.

We can say this with confidence because as a passenger, we take for granted that you know the location before you take the job.

Which is usually how it works with the smartphone transportation apps.

Your driver takes you to your desired location and once you reach your destination, your account is debited.

Sadly, for this passenger, it was a shocking experience when he got notified that Uber was trying to take more, way more than the cost of the ride from his bank account.

"Oliver Kaplan, 22, was told it would cost just £10 (R204) for the four-mile (6km) trip from Hyde to Ashton-Under-Lyne on a trip to meet friends for drinks." (Daily Mail)

Oliver was told that the trip, which was around 15 minutes, would cost between £10 and £11 at most. So roughly, R204 to R224.

But he woke up to a notification showing that Uber tried to debit him for a whopping £35,000 (R714,000).

He immediately contacted the customer care department and at first, they were mind-boggled. But after some digging, they found the reason for this crazy charge.

The drop off point was Ashton-under-Lyne, an area in greater Manchester, UK. However, it seems that the location the driver had was Ashton, Australia.

Talk about making a mix-up!

Oliver was told that they tried to debit his account of the R700k+ but it came back as an error as his account had insufficient funds.

But he made a fair point in saying that had he had that money, it would've been an even bigger blunder to get that money refunded from Uber.

And that too, over a mistake that he doesn't quite know who made. In our opinion, if the Uber driver saw the trip was that much, then he should've known something was up.

"'Thankfully they were really good about it and made it right straight away - but it was a stressful half an hour to say the least.' Uber said: 'As soon as this issue was raised on Oliver's account, we immediately corrected the fare. We're very sorry for any inconvenience caused.'" (Daily Mail)
