Parenting isn't always about protecting our kids from the bad, but also allowing them to make informed decisions when they face challenging situations.

Of course, for many, it is only natural to want to be your child's saving grace through every fall or scratch they get. But, while that may be a valid concern, what are we as parents doing to prepare our children for emergencies?

A video circulating on social media shows a toddler frantically trying to wake her father from bed. In the video, shared by Newsner, it appears the father was experiencing a low blood sugar episode.

According to the Cleveland Clinic website: "Hypoglycemia happens when the sugar (glucose) level in your blood drops below the healthy range. It’s also called low blood sugar or low blood glucose. Hypoglycemia is common in people with diabetes, especially Type 1 diabetes

"Severe hypoglycemia can be life-threatening and requires treatment with emergency glucagon and/or medical intervention."

To counteract the effects of hypoglycemia, the person experiencing low blood sugar needs immediate treatment. They should eat or drink something that will cause their glucose levels to rise.

In the video, the child enters another room in the house and gets what looks like a box of medication. After forcing a tablet into her father's mounth he finally wakes up.

Many people celebrated this girl's brave efforts, but some questioned whether this was scripted. Whether scripted or not, this is an ideal example of educating children on how to conduct themselves in an emergency.

It is a big eye-opener for parents who feel they need to protect their kids from life's harsh realities, such as illness, death and even crime.
